Maersk and CMA CGM are understood to be studying new ships of up to 24,000 TEU.

MSC is reported to have placed ten firm orders for 20,000 TEU ships, with options for ten more.

The new vessels may not arrive before 2030.

By then, Suez could be fully open again.

Or Cape routing could still be absorbing extra ships.

Carriers cannot know which.

But they may need to order before the answer is clear.

What are they really buying?
