The containership fleet keeps growing.
More ships should mean more space.
But another part of the system is struggling to keep up.
Cargo is growing faster than the infrastructure handling it.
And congestion is now affecting more than the port itself.
That matters because a bigger fleet only helps if ships can keep moving.
So where is the real capacity limit now?
And can the network absorb the next wave of ships?

1️⃣ Cargo has grown faster than terminals
The gap is becoming clear.
Far East headhaul volumes have risen around 25% since 2024.
Global terminal capacity grew around 10%.
Maersk says some major terminals are already completely full.

2️⃣ Congestion is removing real capacity
Almost 2M TEU is tied up by port delays.
That equals about 5-6% of the global fleet.
The long-run average is only 2.3%.
The ships still exist.
But the market cannot use them fully.

Schedule reliability remains around 55–60%.
Late ships are losing around ~6 days.
Before the pandemic, delays were closer to ~3 days.
That matters across thousands of voyages.

4️⃣ The bottleneck can move inland
Working the ship is only one step.
Containers still need to leave the terminal.
A 24,000 TEU ship creates much sharper peaks in yard, truck and rail demand.
Bigger ships can therefore strain infrastructure even without more port calls.
Maersk says pressure now extends from ports into inland transport.
Hapag-Lloyd is seeing the same pressure in current operations.
Several terminals are running at high yard utilisation.
Some ports are already facing significant delays.

5️⃣ Port capacity is becoming strategic
Ports are investing.
But major infrastructure can take close to a decade to expand.
APM Terminals Maasvlakte II is adding 1,000 metres of deep-sea quay.
The expansion adds around 2m TEU of capacity.
Hapag-Lloyd is also buying a 25% stake in the terminal.
CMA CGM is investing $434m with RSGT in Jeddah Terminal 4.
The terminal will add up to 2.6m TEU of annual capacity.

Shipping has spent years watching fleet supply.
Ports now deserve the same attention.
A bigger fleet creates more nominal capacity.
But ships still need somewhere to go.
And containers still need to leave the terminal.
Today, congestion is already absorbing ~5-6% of the fleet.
At the same time, cargo has grown faster than terminal capacity.
That can keep the market tighter than fleet numbers suggest.
For carriers, it affects utilisation and reliability.
For shippers, it affects space, delays and cost.
For ports, it raises the pressure to invest faster.

We almost never run out of trucks. We run out of doors at 4am, when everything wants to be on the dock at once. The trailers are there. The drivers are there. The building can only open so many holes at a time.
The fix is usually not more concrete. It is spreading the arrivals out so the peak stops fighting itself. A berth is a door with bigger numbers.
