Rotterdam is one of Europe’s biggest ports.

Its container volumes look almost flat.

That may sound like little has changed.

But two parts of the business are moving apart.

  • One is losing cargo.

  • The other is growing.

Both need the same limited terminal space.

For port and carrier CEOs, this matters.

So which business is becoming more important?

Here are 4️⃣ signals:

1️⃣ The total hides the real change

  • Rotterdam’s TEU volume grew just 0.1% YoY.

  • That covers January–September 2026.

  • But container tonnage fell 2.2% YoY.

  • The port is handling a different cargo mix.

💡 Total TEU no longer tells the full story.

2️⃣ Transshipment is losing ground
