šŸ”„Greetings, Maritime Mavericks!

Global trade is rarely simple. But right now, it is getting even more complicated — and more creative.

After the US raised tariffs on Chinese goods, China did not just accept the pain.

Instead, many Chinese businesses began moving their products through Southeast Asia first, then shipping them on to the United States.

By changing shipping documents, and sometimes adding minor assembly, they try to avoid the extra tariffs.

šŸ”What’s happening in the numbers?

  • Chinese exports directly to the US fell 43% in May

  • Exports to ASEAN countries jumped 15%

  • Exports to the EU rose 12%

A large share of this trade is ā€œre-exportā€ — Chinese-made goods going through Vietnam, Indonesia, or Malaysia before reaching America. The aim? Avoid Trump’s tariffs.
