3- Who said it?
Weβll give you quotes from the container shipping news, and you have to name the prominent person who said it.
βOne extra million dollars of fuel costs is put on top of every voyage that goods around the Cape of Good Hope instead of Suez Canal. The increased charges shouldn't become fixed after the threat of attack on ships has subsided. Everyone needs to have their costs covered from an escalation, but they can't become embedded."
βA snapshot of all container vessels with a capacity of 16.000 TEU or more. It is very clear that all vessels coming from Asia are now diverting to take the round-Africa route. Likewise, the Mediterranean is almost entirely a 1-way street of vessels heading for the Straits of Gibraltar. Somewhat akin to seeing a bathtub being drained. A few remain stuck in the Red Sea with a choice between running the missile gauntlet by the Houthis or pay, likely, more than Β½ million USD to get through the Suez Canal to get back to the Med.β
βThe closure of the Red Sea to most container shipping after a series of attacks from Yemenβs Houthi militants was brutal and dramatic. There were βno winnersβ as a result of the situation, which has forced vessels to take long and costly detours around South Africa. Our fuel bill will be 50 per cent higher as a result of ships taking the longer route. If unresolved, ships will soon be out of position, threatening logistics and global supply chains.β
βThe entire world depends on international shipping. Seafarers, ships and cargoes should not be the subject of attacks. We must all work together to ensure safety of seafarers, freedom of navigation and stability of supply chains. And I join the calls for caution and restraint to avoid further escalation of the situation in the Red Sea and the broader region.β
