Why Are Carriers Still Buying Ships?

A huge supply wave is coming. The right ship is still scarce today.

More than 1,100 containerships, totalling nearly 9m TEU, are due in 2027 and 2028.

That should make carriers cautious about buying ships now.

Yet second-hand prices remain firm.

Only ~130 ships changed hands in H1/2026, down from ~200 a year earlier.

The fall was not caused by weak demand.

Many owners simply preferred strong charter income to selling.

The future fleet is large. The ships available today are not.
