Why Are Fewer New Container Ships Dual-Fuel?
Orders are still strong. Fuel flexibility is falling.
More than 230 containerships were ordered in the first half of 2026.
Only around 25% had dual-fuel propulsion.
In the first half of 2025, the share was 62%.
At first glance, that looks like a move away from alternative fuels.
But the deeper change is in ship size.
The fuel transition is moving into a harder part of the fleet.
The order mix is changing
Recent ordering was dominated by ships above 10,000 TEU.
