Shipping lines already control the ships.

Now they are buying more of the terminals those ships use.

  • CMA CGM invested $2.5bn in terminals, with 66 in its portfolio.

  • MSC’s TiL agreed $1.4bn for 49% of Vizhinjam.

  • Hapag-Lloyd agreed to acquire 25% of Maasvlakte II.

Yet Hapag-Lloyd will not operate the terminal.

So this is not simply about owning ports.

What are carriers actually buying?

Here are 5️⃣ signals behind it:

1️⃣ Sometimes they are buying access — not control

Hapag-Lloyd agreed to acquire 25% of Maasvlakte II.

APM Terminals will keep operational control.

The deal secures long-term capacity at a key Gemini hub.

💡 A minority stake can secure strategic access without running the terminal.

2️⃣ Terminal equity can release capital
